It's 4:21 AM here, so i'll put some light on this one in the morning. It has to do with the #GU project. I have to be at my office in 4 and a half hours....so it's just good night for now.

*Update: This should be an assistant for the astronaut i've finished earlier. It would be placed on the back of his back pack, and serve as some sort of "eye in the sky"
The top panoramic camera is for tracking stars, and different patterns for guidance, taking into account there isn't an easy solution for GPS when visiting another planet. The bottom cameras are for video feedback to the astronaut, and also help with mapping the surrounding environment.
The idea came from robotic quadcopters that are in the works right now at different universities and research centers, for the easy multidimensional control they have, and also mobile phones, in the way they've become a sort of an extension of ourselves, like a smart pet or augmentation.
It's basically an extension of our own sensors.
Unlike his early terrestrial counterparts, i've made a light carbon fiber (maybe graphene :P ) case surrounding the delicate motors and moving parts because Mars has a real dust and weather problem, and it should be rugged enough for that environment.

Still looking into composition ideas for this project.
I should also buy some ram. This model needs an animation, i'm kinda stuck with some detailed mountains for the backdrop, and it keeps crashing on me after a certain number of objects and large textures in the scene. My slots are full, so maybe in a month or so, i'll replace all the memory with larger ones.
The idea for this one came after watching a lot of Hayao Myiazaki movies.

Leave some comments if somebody likes this project, so i'll be more motivated on finishing it.

Some further material and lighting tests. This was done mainly for relaxation, because rigging the model and all the technical stuff is a big pain in the ass, and there isn't much visible progress in them.

The suit was nearly finished by this time, and i was testing some of the normal mapping and how it looks under different lighting conditions.

Geek warning : Skip the text bellow if you're that kind of idiot that thinks we didn't land on the moon.
It's mainly based on the current astronaut suit ISA, NASA, or JAXA use, but somewhat in a near future.
The helmet is lower than usual, but it has a head orientation tracking system so the HUD and helmet rotates following the turning of the astronauts neck. It will show in animation (I know it's boring stuff but the industrial designer in me wants all that shit to have a purpose, because i wanted it to turn, a thing that it's not implemented in current generation space suits, so the astronaut has to move it's whole body just for looking around)
On the backpack it will feature some solar cells for optimizing autonomy (i'll show details later) , his legs have some enhanced features that act as exoskeleton and muscle helpers. As my animation will feature some Mars scenes and at it's size the planet has only half of Earths gravity, carrying the whole suit and backpack won't be such a walk in the park like in Lunar gravity.
OLED flexible map and digital communication/assistant attached to his right arm.
The metal things on the upper part of his backpack serve as evacuation and radiators for the energy creating systems using those solar cells, but most importantly collecting, filtering gases from the planets atmosphere and chemically separating those into basic usable elements like oxygen, carbon, hydrogen, and what-not. The main idea was if the astronaut has to go outside his lander, that time could be used for passive gathering of resources and fuel.

#GU project. A model created for a music video that i'm currently working on. It's a good opportunity for refreshing some rigging skills due to the complicated nature of an astronaut suit.

*the GUI inside the helmet it's just a temporary thing and i'm working on my own. The current files are taken from the MassEffect 2 HUD. They were the first thing i found on google while looking for some heads up graphics just to get a feel for what i was aiming, and if it looks good.

I've had a very lazy weekend, so no updates for the moment. I kept drawing, and made some videos, but i have yet to make the compositing. I'll have some updates, today or tomorrow.
Also, 3DsMax kept crashing on me for no reason whatsoever, and that was a huge part for my lack of updates. I got fed up trying to work on the project.

So,.....the past few days i've been having some nightmares.
And it's not that bad as it sounds. I'm being followed by this creature, and every night i try to remember more, and more about the way it looks, the way it moves, the mechanical part, and it's behavior.

I'm drawing every morning during coffee breaks at work, and my desk here and at home is full of different little sketches....with knees, mouth...mechanical parts from the spine...etc.

I'd like to keep this project as a diary. I'll try to make a video with sketches...and the process behind the whole creature modeling.

I guess depression suits my creative side. I'll try to make the best of my sleepless nights.

I'm working hard on the light setup, and the overall feel of the scene. I'm not quite happy now, i don't really know what i hate most about it. Maybe i need to sleep on it, and maybe tomorrow something will click.

PS. The backdrop image is just for testing now :) , i'll have more detail on the ground, and some props.

Sorry, for the lack of updates, ...long story short, i had some work related problems.
Ok, soooo.....it's kinda finished, some details remain, the neck, and i have to solve some posing issues. In the movie version the lack of a third dimension left for some creative freedom, but here, the robot's whole body must be a little tilted to one side for the "horn" to be along the horses right side.

I got the overall shape of the rider done. I had some problems translating a 2D drawing into a practical mechanical object. The hands and feet are connected to the main body, so i needed to figure out some motion limits in the limbs.

Animatrix tribute

I was inspired one night by a short scene that said a lot to me, after viewing for the 6th or 7th time Animatrix. Great animation movie. One of the best, alongside Ghost in the Shell....all of them. Cyberpunk is da' shit.

Long story short, i wanted to model this robotic "apocalyptic" horse, in greater detail .....in the movie it'a a scene about a few seconds. I have only the shape for reference , so for much of the time i'm doing some "freestyle" interpretation.

I'll post work in progress shots, so keep tuned.
